Southeast Seminary Field Trip

Back in May, as we were studying the History of Ecumenical Traditions– CH601, I took the class and wives to the Marietta Greek Orthodox Festival in Metro Atlanta. The festival was hosted by Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church.

The priest, Fr. Panayiotis Papageorgiou, was giving a lecture on iconography, after which he engaged in a 30 minute discussion with my students and their wives on the topic. My students acquitted themselves very well. One student Jim Gardner mentioned some symbolism in one icon, to which Fr. Panayiotis replied, “I have never Thought of that, but that is quite plausible.” The priest even allowed the students to approach the altar and showed us intimate details of the altar, explaining how he consecrates the Eucharist.

This outing made our students realize that iconography fits in with worship in the CEC, and that our theology is basically Orthodox at its foundation.

On January 12th the class will begin Practical Homiletics. The students are 2/3 of the way through the graduate program.
